Z2K Celebration Event: what we got up to

On Thursday 16th January 2020 6pm-8pm, Z2K were excited to host our first ever celebration event at St Anne’s Church in Soho. It was the first opportunity we had to bring all that are involved with Z2K, from funders to volunteers to clients, to see our achievements from 2019.

A HUGE thank you to everyone that attended Z2K’s celebration event last week on Thursday 16th January at St Anne’s Church, Soho. We had a fantastic evening with our funders, supporters, volunteers, staff and clients, and we are extremely thankful to our sponsors Mayer Brown, Morrison & Foerster, Cooleys and Kingsley Napley for contributing to the event.

We began the evening by welcoming guests with our new tote bags filled with our brand new about Z2K leaflet and information about our sponsors. All staff from Z2K attended the event and were regularly engaged with supporters talking all things Z2K. We officially launched with a welcome speech from Z2K’s Chief Executive, Raji Hunjan, as well as the launch of the about Z2K video:

Another huge thank you to Theo Delaney, Tony Briggs, Ruth Barrett and Datshiane Navanayagam for their support in making this video happen. We finally have a simple 2 minute video explaining the work of Z2K and our mission of Fighting Poverty. Give it a watch and a share if you haven’t already!

We also shared our successes from 2019 from our casework, projects and campaigns:

And we showcased work from our photography workshop with James Hopkirk, where our clients told their personal stories and experiences of accessing benefits and services through photography:

We were excited to introduce our work with Ice and Fire Theatre Company where some of our clients have been working with Christine since 2018, with an opportunity for individuals to express themselves and everything they have experienced through performance.

It was a raw and honest rendition of what life has been like for four individuals we have supported at Z2K:

“Brilliant event. We’ve been working with a group of Z2K clients and tonight was our first (very enjoyable) public outing!” [ice & fire tweet]

The performance was well received by attendees:

“Really powerful takeaway for me on a client’s experience of working with Z2K “They just listened to me” [supporter feedback]

“Proud to be joint sponsors of great Z2K (Zacchaeus 2000 Trust) event tonight to celebrate their successes over the last few years. Such invaluable service they provide to potentially vulnerable people facing the vagaries of the benefit system. Great performance from members of Ice and Fire Theatre Company. Thank you.” [feedback Kingsley Napley]

“Such powerful storytelling. This is what a client-centred organisation looks like” [supporter feedback]

Both our Ice & Fire workshop and our photography workshop are part of our project called Stepping Stones; in partnership with South West London Law Centre. The client performance was followed by a Q&A between our Trustee, Alex Macqueen, and a previous client of Z2K, Jim Widdowson. Jim shared his own experiences of claiming disability benefits and having to prove his illnesses and disabilities. The conversation provided a clear picture of people’s experiences of going up against the culture of disbelief.

It was a fantastic evening really evidencing Z2K’s priorities of involving client voice in everything that we do, and empowering our clients to speak out about the injustices they have experienced. Our client centred approach reaches people whose voices are least heard and most at risk of losing their home.
